Back in June we visited PS1 in Long Island City to watch construction of their summer farm elevated high in the sky in recycled paper mailing tubes. Public Farm 1 is now finished and in full bloom! There are lettuces, herbs, flowers, tomatoes and scallions growing in abundance. They even have chickens laying eggs! Plus the farm provides much needed shade to visitors who splash around in the wading pool underneath.

There is also a huge, stylish and enthusiastic crowd who visit every Saturday afternoon to enjoy the PS1 "Warm Up" summer music series.
The Art and Hunger crew was there this past Saturday to hear the Kelley Polar Quartet. Kelley Polar's absurdist music was grating on the ears, and we must say we and several of the PS1 staff seemed happy when it ended. But we did have a lively debate about wether Kelley Polar is intentionally trying to annoy people with his Post Modern music, or if he truly loves his sound and meant it with sincerity.
In contrast, the DJs of Metro Area were wonderful. They spun smooth, funky grooves that immediately got the whole crowd out on the dance floor. With a beautiful blue sky above and new dance moves being invented all around us on the dance floor, this was the place to be. Forget the Hamptons people, come to your local Public Farm 1!
